Six Women Who Changed Science. And The World. Part 2.

Part 1 • Purchase

ezzrie okay here we go part 2

Ada Lovelace: mathematician who collaborated to write some of the first computer ‘programs’ though no computers actually existed yet. of the first people to conceptualize computers, she was the only one to envision them as something more than giant clunky calculators.

Dorothy Hodgkin: figured out how to learn the chemical structure of really complicated biological substances. penicillin for one thing but also tons more. revolutionized biochemistry. this cannot be overstated.

Jocelyn Bell Burnell: was the first to discover a pulsar, a type of giant wacky space thing that can keep time better than anything else in universe so far. she was denied the nobel prize in favor of her male superiors.

Elizabeth Blackwell: first woman to receive a medical degree in the united states. was a fairly successful activist for female doctors and scientists in west.

Barbara McClintock: responsible for near everything you learned about genetics in school that wasn’t due to Mendel. McClintock’s work did not face much discrimination because it was that rock solid. this cannot be overstated.

Lise Meitner: you probably haven’t heard of her but you’ve probably seen this picture:

she co-discovered nuclear fission and used her data to confirm and expand the theories of relativity. her discovery would later be used to develop atomic bombs, something she refused to take part in.
